I’m planning my party on the 6th, and don’t worry, I already read this whole website, plus the multiple people asking the same question on here lol. My question is that on the BIrthday bash it says that they can Make an announcement and make request. I am a HUGE H.I.M Fan and want to know if you guys have that in your collection. The 6th is a Saturday, And I’m planning on having it upstairs in the bar area. I go to area about once a month at least and I am familar with the music, so I’m just curious if that is do able. Oh and I’m bringing a big H.I.M cake is that okay as well???

me and my sisters are looking for a place to dance (one is 20 so it needs to allow under 21), i was recommended here but they kinda want to dance top 40 style and your website seems to show more gothic. is there a different floor for hip hop kinda dancing on saturday nights?? if not do you know of a place in salt lake there is??
Hiya Sara – we’ve got a lot of popular tracks that we play here though our playlist isn’t really heavy w/ hip hop – we do mix some hip hop in here and there :)
Your best, most danceable nights would probably be a Friday or Saturday. Though if you want to step into the old school top 40 you are welcome to come in for some 80’s on Thursday – it’s super fun that night as well!
If you do decide to check out another club I think Club Sound is 18+ – but don’t quote me on it.

Hey I’m just wondering I tend to make it to the club most every Thursday Friday Saturday I’m sure the door man recognizes me by now. Since I go so often I was wondering if there is such a thing as a VIP Pass I can buy so I can save a little money with the cover cost. I’m not 21. only 19. Ok Josh, and others who are curious about a VIP pass for more than one night. We’ve got that in the works for the future with the result being possibly a monthly or annual pass. And VIP passes would be only for those 21+. So in the meantime the cover charge still applies.
We do appreciate you coming in as much as you do and dancing your butt off each week – Hope the cover charge doesn’t put you off too much from catching your groove here.

Hey Reed,
Our intention is to have an expiration programed into it where you will have a month to use it. Currently that isn’t the case since we are still building that in. Your best bet is to use it relatively soon after you sign up for it though (& during the month) – just to be sure.
Also you don’t have to print anything but the doorman must verify the name on your government issued ID exactly so make sure that matches with the name you put in when you signed up :)

So, I wasnt quite understanding what was mentioned above. My birthday is on the 30th. The same night you are having the Fetish..My friend wants to take me here for my 18th.. Were you saying that a birthday that falls between those dates are still able to have the free birthday bash that night?

This month we are making special consideration for people who have a birthday during our Hallo-Week (Thurs Oct 28 to Sun Oct 31st). Since those four days are considered a special event everyone who comes to the club any of those days must pay the regular cover charge. For those whose birth date falls between 10/28 to 10/31 you may choose to celebrate and partake of the Free Birthday Bash either during the week before (10/20 to 10/23) OR the week after our Halloween special event week (11/3 to 11/6).
And if you are up to it we’d love to have you party with us during the Hallo-Week as well – just pay the cover charge and join in the fun!

Yes you can have your birthday bash on the Friday after your birth date on the 1st. You may throw your party within 7 days before or 7 days after the date of your birth. Hope to see you soon!
What if I do not currently have a valid drivers license, would a state issued ID work?

A state issued ID will work just fine since that is government issued. Also if you have a passport that works too :)

I am wanting to have my birthday bash at Area 51 this Friday the first of October. It is the Zodiac ball. Will I be able to get my friends in free or is that one of the exceptions as a special event?
Hi Jay, so sorry I didn’t get this till later! Hope you were able to have your birthday bash the 1st of Oct. People are welcome to celebrate their birthday on both the Zodiac Ball and the Fetish Ball as they are not special events. This Halloween week from Thurs Oct 27th to Sun Oct 31st will be considered as part of a special event for each one of those days. So if your birthday happens to fall on one of those days (27th – 31st) we are making an exception for your birthday bash to be held either the week before or the week after.

Do you have strobe lights going on Saturday night? If yes, is there an part of Area 51 to avoid them?

Yes,, we have a lot of strobe lights that get used on the upstairs dance floor (a few small ones on the downstairs floor).
However, the answer is YES, you can escape the strobes in about 2/3′rds of the club.
the upstairs and downstairs bar are safe havens, and the two outdoor patios as well :)
Also note that we do not use these heavily for every song… only where appropriate, so you would only see heavy usage about 1/4 of the time, even on the dance floor.
Feel free to come say hello up in the DJ booth, and perhaps we can arrange a few tracks where we will not use them for sure so that you can get your dance on without them ;)

‘Lo Area 51,
I’m interested in serving some Indian-Mexican fusion snacks at the club for all those hungry dancers. I know you guys have the drinks covered so some nice tangy and spicy snacks would be a perfect combination (the snacks are really light and cheap so they won’t slow anyones groove down).
If any of you guys came to the Earthwell Festival on the 10th weekend…then hope you remember Masala Salsa’s food and give us a thumbs up. It was quite a hit!
I’m a registered food vendor with the Salt Lake Health Department and I have all the papers in order…just give me the go ahead and I would like to try out one of the alterna-mash nights. It just fits our food style.

I am not sure what he will say, but he is always open to ideas. He will pour over a way to integrate, and if he can find one that works out for everyone, he will email you… (thats pretty standard practice for him btw)

To answer your question directly though:
Area51 is open Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sat of each week.
9pm to 2am each of those days – except for Fetish Night (Last Saturday of the month) when it’s open at 8pm.

lol – It’s not a stupid question @erik :) There isn’t really a dress code here though many like to dress up (especially on theme nights such as Fetish Night). Shorts & t-shirt are fine but you may want to step it up a little if you’re hoping to impress the ladies ;) Just like the ZZ Top song – “Girls go crazy for a sharp dressed man.” #justsayin

My band and I have been trying without luck to get a gig somewhere 18+ (our bass player is 20). Seems we’re a bit too “shocking” for these places to let us play there. Any chance we can play a gig at Area?

There are good chances that this would be able to be worked out if you wanted to do your own promotions and play a show with a few bands on a night we are not normally open.
I am currently building out the “book your event” page, (its not done yet so dont kill me if a few changes get made) but I wanted to bring it up because I had folks like you in mind when I came uf with it.
Again, all the posts are not done yet, but the first one is the important one,, the rest will follow within a month is my guess.
once this is done you will be able to to just about whatever you want, as there will be a system in place for dealing with it.

Just let the door guy know what you are about to be polite, and I dont think you will be bothered by any security since your purpose is benign. :)

I have never really heard of a photo-gig that is “just clubs”. Usually what happens with pro photographers is they cover a variety of areas within a nich, and clubs would be under that umbrella.
thus, you would get a lot of night life / parties / dancers / etc shots under your belt in a portfolio and then a club might make you their go-to for photography if they liked your work.
Myself and a couple others who work for AREA kinga already have this one covered for us ;)

Hi Mande – Yes, our club is 18+ so you must have your id with you – that way our security can verify your age and eligibility to enter the club. If you come in the day after your birthday with your id then you should be able to get in just fine. :)

My daughter turned 18 today. She is very interested in going but she only has the paper permit for an ID… is that sufficient or must we wait till she can get a laminated id?

Your daughter’s paper permit ID should allow her entry if the following apply:
1) It’s a government issued id
2) The information on it about her is clear
3) The photo is also clear and represents her
*if it’s worn out and unreadable then that may not be enough for our security to identify her as of legal age to enter the club.

* You can bond with our bartenders & get awesome alcoholic concoctions if you are 21 or over of course.
* No membership needed! But there’s usually a cover
* Ladies get in Free b4 10pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (Woot!)
* Free Cover on Wednesdays (Karaoke!)
* And Fri & Sat cover charge to get in is $7 for 18-20 and $5 for 21+

Thanks so much for the reply. This is the 6th year that my friends and I have been going to Area and we really do love going there and I understand the ramifications of allowing a minor to get in, but this isn’t the first time I’ve seen those guys overreact and yell at people when it was totally uncalled for to treat people that way. It kind of ruins the night when you’re treated that way you know?

I’m not sure if this email will reach the manager/owner of area, but please forward it if not. So I went to area tonight with some friends and i’ve always been annoyed at how bitchy and rude the staff is at area (minus most of the bartenders and dj radar). my friend just moved back to utah from hawaii and has a hawaii-state issued ID. not a driver’s license, but still a state ID. so the chubby white guy with the hat that always takes IDs said, ‘i’ll give you a club stamp but not a bar stamp’ and so my friend, who’s 25 years old, couldn’t even get into the bar. so on the way out, my other friend and I tried to ask the white dude and the big brown dude with the cane why he couldn’t get a bar stamp. basically what they said was that he needs to get a driver’s license and later they said he needs to get a ‘real ID’. when we told them that he doesn’t drive and he just moved back and we asked why a state ID isn’t valid, they got all pissed off and started yelling at us to just leave. it was so ridiculous. they were so rude when we were just asking questions (cuz we wanna go to the fetish ball on july 31 and not have problems). i can’t believe they treat people like that and get away with it. they’re always so incredibly rude for no reason.
So, my question is, why is his STATE ISSUED ID not valid? what do they think a ‘real ID’ is? just a utah ID? we are so irritated about this whole situation!!

Thanks a lot for your comment. I will indeed forward this message to the general manager and the club owner, as, like myself they are always concerned with making sure that as many people as possible have a superb experience.
In the meantime, my guess about what happened is as follows;
I’ve been working at area 51 since they opened and I have seen this sort of thing happen before. It’s usually legitimate because there are a lot of people who try to sneak in fake IDs. It is inevitable that once in awhile the door guy will see an ID that looks weird (Probably like the one you describe That was from Hawaii ) And not be sure if it is legitimate or not. We’re all just human. At that point we ask them to a error on the side of caution, because as you know there can be huge ramifications if minors get into the bar.
After the door guy has made his decision, the rest of security needs to back him up otherwise there would be no point in having him there in the first place.
Once this occurs, I imagine that any legitimate guest would be a little grouchy. That does not mean that the staff’s on hand needs to be grouchy too for sure. Of course I wasn’t there, so anything at all could have happened, but I can tell you that generally speaking all of our staff are pretty damn nice to my knowledge… And if you encountered a circumstance where one was not, then we totally apologize.
As I said, I will forward this on, but in case there cannot be a reply from the management by the time the fetish ball rolls around,,, I would recommend having your friend take 30 minutes to grab a Utah State issued ID wearing his picture is clear, since at that point there can be no question about it.

You come in during biz hours, and fill out an application.
Put something on it that sticks out about why we should hire you (a good idea on any application to anywhere ;)
and then turn it in!
We always call applicants if we need people for the position.

We are open both friday AND saturday, (and thursday for 80’s night of course)
You will hear a little bit of pop on both friday and saturday (we like to keep it diverse), but we are not a “hip hop club” ;)
So the answer is yes, you will hear some of the super fun stuff sprinkled throughout both nights, but not a lot.
Friday is super electronic (remixes and mashups and stuff like that) and
Saturday is a lot more aggressive (alternative, alterna rock and tech)
but again, I do like to throw some of the fun stuff in for……. well,, FUN!

Although you may have seen a number of Dancers at Area, we do not actually “employ them” ;)
They come because they want too, and because they have fun!
If they are professional (and you are one of these pro’s), I can work out no cover (in general) for them since theye are willing to shake it and be adoraboe in public.
If you want to take me up on this, come see me any Friday or Saturday night in my DJ booth and we can chat about it. (I look forward to meeting you!)
Also, I know for a fact that you can track down groups of dancers at utRave.com
and they may have a better line on where you could go for a gig.

If you have a large party coming in, we can comp your group after we verify that it is your birthday :)
(this would just be a process of showing your ID at the front door on the day in question. We will need to let the door guy know, so reply ASAP!)
We would also love to reserve you a table (or tables) if someone comes in early, (9-9:30) we will help you rope some off with caution police tape ;)
Also, Our DJ’s are generally happy to make birthday announcements, and to play some music for the birthday girl / boy!

The best way is to bring in (or send) a tracked out CD to the appropriate DJ.
Depending on what your genera is, we will distribute it to the appropriate people :)
If I get a sec Ill check out your tracks myself, but the VERY best way to get your music into the hands of the appropriate people is to get it to the club in CD form.
